"Summit" brand harmonic balancers

Avoid them like the plague, I bought one for my big block and within 250 miles the outer ring had spun, went to check my timing and within a few minutes figured out why the timing marks on the balancer werent matching up. Was dead on when I first fired it up but apparently they don't like the RPM very much.

my dad's got 1 on the 350 in his truck... few thousand miles so far, and no problems... and we check timing each year so it still lines up

In normal street driving they are probably ok, but on a big block that spins up to 8500 there will definately be issues. The furthest I've spun my big block to so far was 7500 and this one is definately off now.

And you contacted Summit and told them about your problem, and they said what? They are usually very good in regards to customer service, please pass along the outcome.

SUM-B64268. I did contact Summit and they deeply appologized and said that unfortunately they couldn't take it back or issue any refund or store credit due to the amount of time that has passed since the purchase. The item on their website says it has a 90 day return, granted it has been about a year since the purchase but it has taken that long to get the engine assembled and installed and all of the bugs worked out so it can be driven. I spent about 11-12k with them for all of the parts for the build, and I guess their no bending the rules.

Balancer

If the "Summit" balancer is a Professional Products unit and you have the original box I would contact them.A lot of us buy parts and don't use them until we have the bucks to finally complete the build,I had one of their electric fuel pumps and it lasted about a week(POS Fram filter collapsed and ran the pump dry) I contacted them because it was past the buy date and explained that the delay was I didn't have all the parts to complete the build and just fired it up.I had to print out an online claim form and 10 days later I got a new pump, they were very courteous and helpful.Good Luck!

Call and talk to Customer Service and explain the timeline like you did here, along with the fact that you spent mucho dollars with them. Having receipts for the bulk of it on hand so that they can verify sales history will help. Ask to talk to a supervisor if the first person you talk to is no help. Be calm and let them know that you will go elsewhere in the future if this is how they treat a repeating customer. Use the JEGS word if it comes down to that. Be calm.

I agree w/ericnova72. I've had a few issues w/Summit through the years and have NEVER felt that I wasn't treated fairly.

After a couple of frustrating delays from them (didn't tell me about 1/2 of the Pontiac parts I ordered were on back order, yet still billed my CC), they gave me a $75.00 credit towards a future purchase, which I thought was a generous resolution to my problem. Granted, I spend a lot of money (for a "privateer"), but they could have just blown me off- but didn't.

They'll have a record of your purchases, if you don't have all your tickets. Consider what you need to say ahead of time- state the facts, w/o undue emotion, and I'm reasonably sure they'll come around.

If all else fails, tell them that from now on, Jeg's will get your business! lol

Well, it is a Summit brand part so could be made by anyone, anywhere. I know it's easy to think you are saving a few bucks, but when it comes to heads and oil pumps and dampers and crankshafts and rods and so many other things don't shortchange yourself or your project by saving a few bucks. Seems like it never works especially when yo uhave to buy another one or fix other directly related to your saved parts failure. Ramble on...

I recently ordered a set of pistons from them, one was damaged during shipping, when the piston manufacturer did not have a single piston with in the weight range specified by machine shop, they shipped me a new set and picked up the damaged set, no hassle what so ever. I ordered another $350 worth of parts while I was on the phone. Didn't even have to mention Jegs, which was my backup plan.

One thing I hate about Summit is when you search for parts for a specific vehicle. They pull up a ton of generic parts you have to scroll through. So, it is hard to tell if what you are looking at is specific for your vehicle.
