super budget 92 camaro turbo build

figured id share a build ive been helping a friend with

this car stock ran 17.3 second 1/4 miles times all stock
the engine is a 3.1L 60*v6
the only engine mods are a 260 grind cam from delta camshaft and a set of home ported cyl heads that went on with the turbo.

the total cost for the turbo build is 900 bucks
with additional added parts the total comes to 1200 ( meth injection, 2500 stall converter, and adjustable fpr)

ok so heres the build

stock y pipe cut and capped on the end that would run to the cat converter

then we cut a hole in the ypipe facing the front of the motor

the we weld up piping to the front of the motor.
there is plenty of ground clearance and the pipe wont even rub on a speed bump

here is the turbo and wastegate mounted ontop of the pipe

temporary downpipe connecting to the exsisting factory ex system

downpipe and wideband location

intercooler mounted up in the nose of the car

charge piping from the intercooler to throttle body and air temp sensor

complete shot

everything heat wraped to keep heat out of the engine bay and decrease spoolup time

the turbo is a 57mm t3/t4 hybrid capable of 450 hp
the best pass so far has been 13.3 seconds @ 102 mph, thats a gain of 4 seconds flat so far.
right now the injectors are maxed out so we cant push it anymore but a set of 50 pound injectors will be making there way in shortly

tuning is handled by the stock ecm but instea dof the stock code it is running the code 59 which is a modified version of the cyclone/typhon code

Sweet project! I'm just starting to dive into the turbo world with my s10. How much boost is it running?

turbo

thats cool.I like the idea of turbos for the power they make.Unfortunately I love the sound of a big cam and free flow exhaust reguardless of the power.13 second quiet v-6 car is a great idea. How is the fuel economy when you keep your foot out of it?Do you know what the sfc is?

without the meth injection it went 13.3 @ 12.5 psi of boost.
with the meth injection it backed up the 13.3 runs 3 times with only 10 psi of boost without changing the tune.

the main reason was the air temps were only 60-70* with the meth instead of 150* with only the intercooler

once the larger injectors get installed this thing should be capable of mid to low 12 second passes around 13-15 psi of boost.the limiting factor in how fast this thing will go with relativly low boost is the pre turbo ex piping

with real headers the car would be just as fast with much less boost

right now we run the car in open loop only mode and its knocking down about 28mpg highway.once the new injectors go in we will tune it and used closed loop which should bring that number up around 32mpg highway.

my personal car has the same motor and a slightly larger turbo, the main differences i made real turbo headers and i run a megasquirt ecm and i can knock down 35+mpg highway if i keep my foot out of it.

the biggest thing i belive that helps my car with the gas milage is i run a 3.73 gear vs the 3:23 . the 3:73's deff help intown driving to get the heavy car moving with much less throttle

sfc?

i switched form 3:73's to 4:10's
i also made the switch from a 26x9x15 slick to a 28x10x15 slick when i did the gear swap

on my friends car that im helping ( the car in the build thread) he runs a 3:23 with a 26x9 slick

he will be stepping up to a 3:42 or 3:73 set though eventually but nothing higher

i run the 4:10's cause i turn my motor to almost 8,000 rpms , he only turns 6500 rpms since his bottom end is not setup to spin as high as mine

my motor makes peak power alot higher then his due to cam and heads
but my car is still very very street friendly

most v8 guys will run a 3:23 gear with a turbo sbc

he has decided to step it up more now that he has 48# injectors on the way.
in the next week or 2 i will be building a set of proper turbo headers for him.
with the headers he should be able to run the same times with only 6-7 psi of boost compared to 11-13 psi

i also forgot to add on my 355 twin turbo iroc i am running a 2:73 gear and a 26 inch tall street tire with the over drive transmission. so far it runs great with the low gears , but i have nothing to compare it to yet.

i suspect with a th350 or th400 transmission it would be slugish in 1st gear but then again i sized my turbos for pretty much instant boost so........

That is nice. A freind in the late 90's supercharged a grand am GT, but if i recall it was a 3.4L v6. Was real quick, high 14's at the track.
