Surf rack for a Chevelle

Hey guys, I have a '67 Chevelle, and I am an avid surfer as well. I am having problems finding a rack that will fir the roof of the car, but I was told at the local surf shop today that there are vintage racks out there that fit this type of car. Has anybody seen one, or maybe even have one stashed in thier garage that they are looking to get rid of? Thanks, Sam

This car was at a local cruise in last saturday evening.

It looks kind of cool with the surf boards on the roof.

Maybe a source like ebay will have a roof rack like the one you need for your Chevelle Wagon?

That car looks awesome, and so does mine with the board on the roof. I even requested a board to match the color of my car. I checked out ebay, but all that they have are like the strap kind, and I don't want to wreck my new paint job. I would love to find a solid rack like that, one that would mount to the rain gutters or something.

Check your local junkyards. Astro Vans have quite a selection of different style racks. They are generally fairly wide and you may be able to adapt one to your rain gutters
I've got a black one on an Astro, similar to the one on the Pontiac, you can have it if you want to pay the shipping...
You can see it in this photo.

They aren't the prettiest things, but I bought a pair of cross bars from this place for $49:

I carried two kayaks simultaneously (about 40lbs each) on this car many, many times before I sold it. Here is a pic with one:

They clamp onto the rain gutters and can be installed/removed in less than 2 minutes.

Thanks for the replies. I just went down to my local speed shop that also does truck racks and such, and the guys there pointed me to a Thule rack system that looks like this. It is a nice set up, and will coming in on Monday to try out on my car. Thanks again, Sam

I thought when people bought a used car that had a roof rack they took it off soon after. Just kidden, it should look right at home on that wagon crusiing to the beach to surf. Glad to hear you found one to try out, and hope it works out for you. I wouldn't think something like that would be too hard to fabricate or find someone to do it. But then again, the things you think are simple to do often wind up being a pain in the neck.

Exactly. I just want something that will last. I only booty fab on my truck, and I have no qualms about spending the $150 on a top of the line rack that won't give me guff everytime I strap a board to it.
