Swap out rear gears in 84 olds 98?

i have a 84 olds 98 equipped with what i think is a 8.5 with tiny little 2.40s in it
i don't have enough money to buy new lower gears and a carrier, is it possible to swap the carrier and gears out of some other vehicle and put them in my axle like out of a pickup for example?
anything would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct - this is the standard 8.5" ten bolt GM corporate C-clip axle. Most 80s vintage carriers and gear sets bolt into your housing. 80s F-body cars are good sources. So are full size Chevy cop cars and taxis.
