Swapping a 3.8 for a 4.3 ???????????

O.K.

Sadly enough my project may be on hold for awhile.

I came across a COMPLETE V6 & Tranny,in my search for a SBC V8.

It's a old 4.3 with a straight Carb,& the motor mounts still on it.
(# 471594)

It turns freely & looks to be in good shape, the guy says it was running when they took it out of a 72' El Camino.

My wife really likes the Idea of dropping the combo down into our 83' Cutless Supreme,(thought it was a 84" until i checked the title) .

It has a "NONRUNNING" 3.8 and tranny in it as we speak.

Heres the question...

Will the 4.3,& tranny go right into the Cutless without a FUSS?

Are the two Tranny's the same.So I can rebuild the old one that comes out with the 3.8,and set it back as a spare for the 4.3?
(DEAR GOD HELP ME,there both automatics!)

I checked the Forums,& unless it's hidden,in code etc... didn't see anything answering these particular questions.

I really do need to get a Back-Up car going quickly,as we have only one car running,(under protest) at the present.

G.M. made a 3.8 chevy. style but if the ignation dist. is in the front of your Cutlass it is Buick style and unless you are lucky enough to have the multi bolt partern 350 the 4.3 will not bolt to the 3.8 trany nether will the engine mounts. The 4.3 uses all 350 chevy mounts and brackets. The only 4.3 with a carb that was made[ that im aware of] was in 1985, should make you a good daily driver if you get it hooked up. Good Luck. J.F.

have a look around and see if you can find a 305 v8 and tranny some where. preferably something fuel injected like out of a truck or a camaro. i get 16 miles to the gallon in my camaro with a 600cfm edelbrock. with about 750 dollars in ehaust and other small things im up to about 200 hp from 190 (LMAO). no seriously these motors are made for economy. as soon as i can get some head work done im confident i can bust 250. and thats plenty for me. should keep you out of trouble in the cutlass. im just saying 305 cause they are pretty good on gas and will help with low end torque to get your big body moving plus i bet you can get a 305 combo for dirt cheap... every one hates them but they last....mine ticked over 200,000miles last week no blow by....good compression on all cylinders.....

You'r the second member to "Fuel Inject" me within the past week,
so I suppose I should state my main goal.

"No matter what I build it must be Straight Mechanical".
For the time being I want no part of fuel injection.

Nor do I want a computer in my car of any kind, for any reason.

I am going with 80's Body Cars because they are the last
of the "Size" breed.

I am 6'4" with #3 Children in the home,(all will more then likely
be long legged as well) & my wife is of above average Stature,
(in more ways than one) as well.

I want to be able to do "ALL" of the work on my own cars,
(with hand tools) whenever possible.

When it brakes down it has to be fixed immediately.
What few good Mechanics there are around here are
always backed up,& they keep Bankers Hours to boot.

Not to mention the added expense.

"Straight Mechanical/Big Body" no exceptions,period.

As for the V8,I know allot of you guy's are crazy about them,
(your not the first one to attempt to V8 me either) but I'm sure the 6 will do fine for now.I'ts going in a Family type Car without all the "Emissions Crap" to choke it down. And as I stated before I believe it's alredy been tricked,If not then I'll trick the one I take out when I go to rebuild it.

My Monster Monte will house a 400SBC,(modified) & if for
some reason I find that I have all the Vehicle's Ironed out,
(wife also wants a full size van,& I an el camino) & the Money
begins to Flow as opposed to a Trickle then I will Buy+Build a 71'
Grand Prix in Bermuda Blue Metallic Complete with the "BIG 454".
(the most torque,of any pontiac ever built 500ftp)

So there you have it.I'm going with the 3.8 V6 combo because it's
fine for this car.I will have a spare Motor,& a spare Tranny,
(the combo I pull out to put the new one in) to rebuild/trick at my
leisure,& set back as a back-up.

I won't have to spend any extra time,& money on extra parts
due to changing over to a different size Engine,or Transmission.
This combo can be dropped right in,& I can spend the time,& money
on the interior etc...

AND IT WILL BE ON THE ROAD A WHOLE LOT SOONER!

P.S. I have had #2 305's & a 350 between #3 Trucks,
(form 68'-86') when I go with a V8 it WILL be a 400 or better.
