swapping out s10 trannys

Hello everybody

I have just received a 1991 4x4 s10 with a 4.3 and a bad 5 speed, but I have a good 5 speed that was originally in my v8 s10 before I changed it to auto. My question is will the 2wd drive 5 speed trans(the 2wd truck had the 2.5 4 cylinder)bolt up to the 4.3 and the t-case or am I better off getting one from a similar truck.(I'm just trying to use what I already have) Thanks for your time and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Not sure I follow exactly what you're saying, but here's the scoop:

An S10 that was originally equipped with a 4-cylinder or the 2.8 or 3.1 60-degree V6 are the small V6 bolt pattern tranny. Any S10 equipped with the 4.3 has a traditional small block V8 bolt pattern. The 4.3 is basically a small block V8 minus two cylinders.

4.3 V6 trannys will swap with V8 trannys. 2.8 V6 and 2.5 L4 trannys only swap with each other.

The bellhousing is the only difference between the engine the transmission bolts on to.

No you cannot use the 2wd trans with the transfer case, without basically taking both transmissions apart and swapping out the parts needed to make the 2wd a 4wd. As long as you have one apart you could just rebuild it.

Not really worth the time effort or money in this particular case.

trans swap

the bellhousing is the same but tail & output shaft are proably different I went the other way with a 7000r4 and had to change the tail & shaft because thats where the transfer case bolts in.

thanks everyone

those replies pretty much answered my question. I think I will just find a used
trans out of another 4x4 s10 and save myself the headache.

thanks again everybody.
