Sway Bar endlink/drive axle question

I finally got cracking on changing out the drive axle on my wife's '96 Buick Skylark. I just put new front brake pads on this car 4 weeks ago, and didn't notice anything wrong before, except that one of the small metal CV boot clips on the left side had rusted off. When I pulled the wheel off today, I was greeted by a severely torn boot and a broken sway bar endlink. I went around the other side, and found the right side endlink broken too. Now I'm curious as to what I did or how both sides would break like that.

I'm thinking that they might have been broken while our road was under construction (total tear out of old road) and we only had rough access to our driveway. Or, could the left side endlink have broke, ripped the clip and boot off, and then caught the axle shaft just right and side-loaded the right side enough to break? Any hunches? I know I've never seen anything like this...

In a while, Chet.
