well a 400 is a big engine and with a 300 degree cam and a carefull porting allong with other matched components you should be able to get into the 450 Hp range, even with GM heads. I am going to send you a mail with pics of what the port job involves. and when you are done porting and unshrouding the valves to match the larger bore of the 400, then get the biggest valves you can fit in there, and you should be there

I know ive said this before but why do you insist on useing those antiquated heads, i mean when a set of stage 2 bowtie heads are only 600 dollars?

well it goes like this... I am 17 and broke and there isn't much to swapping heads later on so I am gunna put as much money as I can into the bottom end for now and if I ever decide to get new heads or the old ones just don't work out.. I don't have to redo the bottom end... I mean sure I will lose money cuz of what I put into these antique heads but if it is a real problem I can sell them

Is the 400 a chevy, pontiac, or what? www.pontiacwarriors.com has dyno comparisons using stock heads with slight or heavy porting. They show a 400, bored 30 over, using a comp cams xtreme energy kit, 6x heads, intake, 750 carb, making 450hp and 470#ft. doesn't have alot until 3,000, but with some gearing, you can make up for the bottom end. Check it out, it for nothing else, ideas.

I guess if I were you, I'd drive the car the way it is and buy the right go fast stuff a little at a time. When ya got all the stuff, tackle the build-up. It's important that all the parts are designed to work together, but I realize I'm not telling you what you don't already know. Check e-bay, the local paper, local clubs, etc. and you just might find some great buys. I wish all the really cool stuff wasn't some damn much money!!!

well here is the thing... if I find a sweet *** job that I make a huge amount of cash... then my budget for the engine will be significantly higher.. OH yeah and have you ever had the need to go faster but are stuck with a bagged 305..... its not fun..
