t-3 headlights

At a friends salvage yard I pulled all of the T-3 headlights. When I tried to test them they fill with smoke and blow out. I tested then with a 12 volt battery so can anyone explain why this is happening. Thanks

The only way they can burn out like that is with the presence of air. If the bulb isn't cracked anywhere, the air got in thru the connector spade seals, which were probably disturbed while removing the bulbs from the cars.
