kickdown cable

I have a 1983 buick regal. It has a nicely built 350 pushing about 400 hp. It still has the original 200r4. I'm about to install a th350 that has a nice b&m shift kit in it for an offer I couldn't refuse. Then I find out it came out of a 1976 corvette. And believe it or not with a wonderful 9 miles a gallon its a daily driver. My question is. Is the kick down. Cable a necessity? I've seen a lot of moxed opinions on here but all make valid points. What do y'all think?
Thanks
Chris

If you want Passing Gear 3-2, 2-1 & 3-1 by only depressing the Accellerator pedal you need the Detent cable connected. If you don't mind down shifting manually it's not needed.
