T-350 Reverse feels like brakes are on

I took my Nova to the strip this weekend and made several decent passes with it. The last pass was weird. After the turnout and on the way back to the pits, I heard a really loud whining in second gear. It did stop making that noise on the way back. Trying to back the car up is where the problem is. It engages Reverse just fine, but won't move without giving it some accelerator. It moves in reverse jerking and lurching. In Drive, the shift from First to Second yields that loud whine for a few seconds, then it goes away and everything seem normal. I just hope I haven't broken something major. The transmission is a TH-350 with a shift improver kit behind a 383. Any help before the transmission shop will be very much appreciated.

It is totally toast. Got hot enough to obviously cook and fuse clutches and steels. Fluid stinks and pretty dark. Costly pass there. Blew a head gasket too - either that pass or the one before.
