T-350 trans issue
I have an 85 CJ7 with a Chevy 350, TH350 transmission and NP205 transfer case. The other day when I was driving it started making almost like a swishing sound and is now more of a grinding coming from the torque converter and flexplate. It started out only making the noise in the forward drive gears, now it does it in reverse also. It still moves forward and backward just fine, it also will run through the gears without issue and as smoothly as it always has. I haven't driven it other then move it forward and backward in my garage, I don't want to do any further damage. No noise while in park. I checked the torque on the bolts of the torque converter to the flexplate and they are fine. Inspected the flex plate best I could with the trans still in the jeep and it seems fine to. Dropped the pan on the trans and it has nothing in it that I would say is abnormal. Just small metal shavings. No chunks or anything big. I'm assuming either the torque converter or pump has gone bad. The only thing making me question this as I'm newer to 4wd applications is my rear output seal on the transfer case just started leaking like a sive and I don't know if that would have anything to do with this problem.

The Sprag or Bearing/Bushing between Turbine or Impeller may be bad in the TC/TorqueConverter.

Supposedly this was a new torque converter. Do you think that if the stall rating is too low for the horsepower of the engine it could cause a premature failure of the torque converter?

Well I'm not 100% sure what the power rating is. I just redid the heads 10:1 compression now. New edelbrock carb and intake, Hedman headers I'm guessing it's between 350 and 400hp now. The 350 motor itself came out of a early 70s corvette. I'm thinking I should run a 2500-2800 stall converter.

Stall will depend on many things, Cam duration, rear gear, tire size, intended use, weight etc..
