So driving home today, was goofing off a bit, and left an intersection pretty hard, OK, real hard, shifted to second, and had a real weird smell, and a "ting" noise for just a second. Must a been real loud to year it over my exhaust, kept driving home, and all seemed fine, but I knew my trans was a bit low, had been for a week or so, get home, check it, its way low, which would explain the lazy 2-3 shift and slow reverse engagement, fill back up, it took 2 liters....oops. take my kid to his bball game, and it shifts beautifully, but realized I have no engine braking in second gear. Like zero....at any speed. Down shifting and lifting will let it settle down to idle speed, I get back in the gas and it flashes to where it should be and just keeps on going....no issue, what the hell did I break? Just got home, made a few full tilt passes on my road (countryside road lol) and it works flawless, except for still no engine braking, fluid is clean, doesn't smell burnt,,,.....any ideas? Th350 behind a mildish small block....411 gears if it matters....any input would be appreciated....

Hopefully, some of the regulars will chime in here. You prolly lost a band anchor pin or fried the lining. I can tell you, years ago I installed an ATI full manual VB into a T-400 and the instructions called for the removal of some bands. I called them and was told the trans would have no engine braking in any gear. I could leave them in, but they would never be activated...

And I have seen that as an option in the manual vb as well, and at least now I get to know what it feels like before ordering one lol....but really, Im wondering if there is now stuff floating around my trans, and am I OK to finish the season as it is....and really do wonder what the heck happened....

May have smoked the Intermediate Band, since you mentioned a smell. It provides engine braking in L2.

Do not get a full manual valve body for a street car.
Possible band failure, possible 2nd gear sprag failure or is about to fail.
If you ran it at WOT with low fluid level you nay have smoked the clutches and the band too.

Why are you operating this transmission with low fluid?
If your car is hurtin' ,,,needs repairs don;t beat on it.

Honestly, in a mad rush to get everything done, I simply forgot to top it up....stoopid rookie mistake......that being said, I do have a back up TH350 in my shed, and that will be my rebuild core over the winter. And it gets weirder, been driving it the last few days, and Fri night went out with some buddies to screw around a bit. Still runs fine, still shifts fine, and now has engine braking in 2 again....,so friggen weird....but really, I have maybe a couple weeks left till the snow flies.....so I will run it as is, if it brakes, I will hook it home and pull it over the winter. 3500 b&m converter.....and you say a manual vb isn't a good idea? How come?

you will lose 3rd gear next. You can upgrade to the 400 if you dont mind the H.P. loss. My 80 Camaro ate a couple t-350s so I put a 400 with manual shift body and never had a problem.The cost is only a few dollars more than a 350.move the cross member back 2 inches.Hope your exhaust is not an issue?

Yah its a 350, and I have a spare so will likely just rebuild that and try not to do anything too stupid this time. Nope, no exhaust issue, home built sidepipes lol.....

Driving the car since this happened, trans started acting normal again, engine braking etc, all was normal....wth? How does something like this come and go, then, last night, made 2,full tilt passes right through the top of third gear, on the second one, I slowed down, went to turn on my road, clicked it to second, again, no more engine braking......passed my house, small tour through the country side where I live, drives fine, shifts fine, still no engine braking tho....today, went to pick up my kid, same same, no changes....on our way home he asks me to crank it up just once, so I do.....get to my street, engine braking is back.....I'm completely confused lol.....checked shifter cable adjustment, its good, checked fluid, its full and reasonably clean, doesn't smell burnt.....I just don't get it....
