I recently had my TH400 rebuilt with a Hughes rebuild kit. It now shifts very hard into reverse or drive from park or neutral. 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration is kinda sloppy, not as firm as I would like it and does it early, around 5200rpm. 2nd to 3rd shifts nice and firm.

I talked with the shop and they said they took out the cushion plate to give it a more firm shift. Im not wanting it shift harder from park into drive, than it does from 1st to 2nd!! How hard is it to re-install this cushion plate or should I do something else?

Also what would be the best method to firm up the 1-2nd shift? Will modifying the govenor to allow higher rpm shifts help this, or is it something totally seperate?

To reinstall the Forward clutch waved or cupped Cushion plate for 1st and Direct clutch w/c Cushion plate for Reverse would require dis-assembly of the Trans. A lower Idle speed or TC with higher stall speed will soften the blow.

To firm up 1-2 shift the orifice in the Valvebody separator plate can be enlarged or 1-2 Accumulator modified/blocked or firmer spring added.

Modifying the Governor will only change the WOT shift points. A Governor Recalibration Kit is a good idea for tuning shift points. B&M and TCI etc.. make these.
