Hey everyone. I have finished up the rear suspension on my s10 and am going to be tackling the transmission in the next couple months and wanted to start getting ideas together and figure out what I am going to need.
I have a th400. I tried taking pictures of the tag but it is barely readable. It says -THM on the bottom of the tailhousing (not sure if this means anything). I don't know if this is a good core to start with or if I should look for something different or if there are other IDs/codes I should look for.
I have a 5.3LS with a cam, intake, single turbo. Im hoping to get down into the low mid 10s as time progresses but at first will only be running 11-12 this upcoming season to get used to the vehicle. Vehicle is an 85 S10 with ladder bars, coil overs, 9" with 4.10s and 28x10.5 slicks.
I am aware of the adapter that I need to support the converter hub with the LS motor.
I am looking for input on rebuilding the trans I have. AFAIK it was rebuilt by someone before but have no record of what is/was done to it. I have read some posts online saying that a good rebuild done right will last in 550hp applications without a lot of hard parts being replaced. I imagine at this point I will not be touching the 550-600hp range. The firewall, floor, and interior is all alumimum sheeting and it has been completely stripped down. I can imagine it weighing around 3000lbs.
I was hoping someone would be able to give me insight into a rebuild kit/tutorial that will allow me to rebuild this trans and get what I need out of it at this power level. I have done shift kits before and just factory rebuilds so I am not too intimidated by taking a trans apart but have not done too many modifications to internal components.
I have heard a lot of great things about Jake's rebuild kits and was looking at the stage II and their $30 rebuild manual.
Kits and Components
This is rated at 750HP/TQ and will give me room to grow down the road.
Should I consider a full manual valve body or reverse pattern? Are these to do mods or do they require buying different parts? Should I consider a trans brake? What is the best way to launch a turbo car?
