T-400 with no speedo capabilities

I see buy reading some of the posts on the th400 speedo blanking plug should in theory just knock out!! hmmm, my 400 came out of a amc fsj so was fitted with the plug or what looks like a plug but not in the tail case but as part of the tranny case, but when trying to knock out the plug gave up before i actually smashed the gearbox case to pieces it seems thar on my tranny that the plug is actually a cast part of the trans case and not a plug if i take the tail case of and put my fingers in behind the plug it does not feel like a core plug or some thing simillar need to get my head right in there for sure to see if its moulded part of the case but all i know is it is a tight fit anybody come across this??

On some cases GM did not machine the speed-O area open.

Some were machined and plugged at a later date I guess.

GM may have not installed the core plug, perhaps a shop did on some replacement cases
Dont worry how old you are... it is the mileage on your body that adds up.

Trans plug.

Some Oldsmobile T400's had the speedo hole plugged, they drove the speedo off the front wheel via cable' somewhat simular to early VW speedo cable drives. So I know they did build these that did not have a speedo hole. They did install 400's in many Jeep vehicles, I assume your AMC is a Jeep. They might have driven the speedo off the transfer case?

FSJ = Full Size Jeep

Damn TLA's (three letter acronyms) LOL

When you say smashed the case...you mean totally destroyed it or just chipped it up a bit?

sorry it has taken so long to reply, i tried knocking what looked like a plug out but after a little research and your answers realised that the plug was moulded to the trans casing after a couple of sturdy clouts with a punch i realised the hole would need machining to open up the speedo drive so i actually did not persevere any further with the said 2lb persuader lol so thankfully no chips or cracked case.
