T-400 Numbers

I've got a Chevy TH400 that I bought this thing 20 years ago, so there's no telling what it came out of. While trying to clean up the grime to read the codes stamped on it, I found a big "11" near the bellhousing rim, drivers side. What does this mean? I've seen pictures of them with other numbers (or even letters), so I figure it must mean something.

IIRC, it's a casting/foundry ID ofsome sort. I've not heard of it being used as a "tell" for ID'ing a tranny.

There are some stamped-in numbers on the pan rail that are a partial VIN/engine ID IIRC, and there are riveted on tags that can be used to decipher some of the info on it.

Example:

Thanks, cobalt. I cleaned off enough of the grease to be able to read the riveted tag (I haven't found a stamped VIN yet).

It's a pink () tag with the big "C" and "W" on it.

The serial number reads:

79-CW 19403 across the bottom.

There's also a "557" stamped into the tag higher up.

I gather it is something from 1979, but have no idea about the rest.

Time to bust out more degreaser I guess.

79= Year
CW= Model, I don't have the Model code list.
19403= Serial #
557=?? should be the Julian date "Day of Year" but there aren't 557 days in a Year.

Model code list would look something like this but, for TH400>> http://th350.netfirms.com/pages/7a2-71.jpg

I finally found a list, if anyone else runs into the same problem.

I can't be sure as to its correctness, but hey, it's on the web...

It looks like my tranny comes out of a GMC truck...Series 10.

Oooh, I didn't see the stuff for all the other trannys....awesome. I'm definitely bookmarking that.

One thing about my TH400 is it has the 4" snout. I was under the impression that they usually put longer ones in trucks.
