Post T-5 buildup

I'm looking to build-up a T-5 for "top end" (Bonneville). Is it possible to swap-out 4th and 5th gears for taller ones. any info would help, ie: sources, swaps, secrets. Thanks.

the ford manual shows replacement parts for a hd t-5 basically 2.95 1st gear to 0.63 5th gear. why not use the 85-93 production 3.35 1st gear and the 0.63 5th , what rear end ratio are attempting to use. the hd kit will handle 330ft/lbs of torque.

It sounds like you are a Ford Trans Guru. I am building a Model T Roadster Pickup, (steel body and bed, fenderless on deuce rails). I am using a 5.0L HO V-8 and a 4-speed SROD Manual tranny that I salvaged from a '83 Stang. I know the 4 speed SROD isn't a super durable tranny but I figure as light as the Model T is going to be, and since I will be running narrow "nostalgia" tires, that it should hold up fine.

I have also been told that a Tremec 5 speed is a bolt in replacement for the SROD, same bellhousing, shifter location, length, etc. I figure if I scatter the SROD, I will update to the Tremec.

What do you think?

no, definitely not a guru, lotsa experience with the t-5 and have the ford tech/parts sheets. 82-85 model years clucth size was changed to 10 in. 86 and up are 10.5 i think bellhousing for stock 5 speed was changed in mid 83 so the 7003 fb might no be a direct bolt change. i run the 7003 and upgraded it after several failures. flywheels are the same. the stock 4 speed should be strong enough for your car. if you were to try drag racing and really hook up hard it would proably scatter after alot of abuse. i ran the stock 5 speed until was pushing into the 12's and i have seen stock 5 speeds run into the low 11's. 2nd gear was my weak point running slicks. i will check with my ford dealer (small town parts guy easy to get info out of) and let you know about the stock 5 speed 7003 if it would bolt up for you, it would be less money for a replacement if you do desire one later. the R tremec requires a different bell housing for sure. more later.
