T-5 swap

I have a 1957 chevrolet station wagon with a 1972 350 and the stock '57 3 speed is giving out. i was wondering if i could perhaps replace it with a borge werner T-5 from an 80s camaro because i heard they are fairly universal and simple to install. are they? do i need an adapter plate?driveshaft modification? how much would it cost? thanks for your input!

Yes you will need an adapter or better yet a complete T-5 bellhousing and transmission. Using the adapter method you can keep your existing clutch.

I'm doing this same swap in my 55. The T5 will bolt right up to your existing bellhousing. All you need to do is drill out the T5 mounting bolt holes to a half inch so the same bolts that came off the old tranny will fit through. You may be able to get away with just putting in a new clutch disc if your pressure plate and throwout bearing are fairly new. The T5 input splines from a Camaro come in 14 spline 6 cyl. and 26 spline 8 cyl. versions. You will definately need to shorten your driveshaft a few inches. If you still have the bench seat you'll need to swap the tail housings with a T5 from a Chevy S10 pick up. This will move the shifter about 8 inches forward to clear the seat. The hardest part is probably going to be making or changing a crossmember if you intend on using one. I'm going to stay with my old style bellhousing mounts. Good luck!
