T400 gear vendors vs 4L80E

I'm making some changes to a 41 chev. Had a 475 bbc T350 for 30,000 miles. Just finished a 496 for the car and I want an overdrive. Trying to decide between a 4L80E and a gear vendors T400 set up. Any Thoughts?

The 4L80E is just as strong as the TH400.

The GV and TH400 Is a great combo, giving you a 6 speed automatic. Hard to argue with, but... The 4L80E is just as durable and has a lower first gear for take off and the serious gas saving advantage of a lock up converter, It will require an electronic controller to run it if your vehicle is not already equiped with an "E" transmission and even if it is you may want to get an after market unit rather than try to adapt yours. If I could afford the 4L80E and controller($pricey$) I would certainly prefer it, but since I currently have a strong TH400, the GV overdrive is less than half the price of the 4L80E, and will probably be how I end up. But If you have to buy both the TH400 and the GV unit, then I would go with the 4L80E. It's just as strong as the TH400, but weighs a couple hundred pounds more. I don't know what the GV weighs. The TH350 is living on borrowed time unless seriously modified.

Overdrive

I've heard both ways about how strong or weak the 2004r and 700r4 transmissions are behind big torque. I've been told that a 4L80 is the only OD auto that can consistantly take high HP abuse.

I work at a diesl shop and we are a GV dealer. We have had all kinds of trouble with the electronics on the GV. Can you say cheap China junk. The 4l80e gets my vote and you get a lock up converter.
