T5 Transmission with 4:56 Gears

Okay, the T5 manual transmission in the '88 Mustang GT has problems. It does'nt have 5th gear and reverse. The guy who sold me the car said something about a spring missing that holds a rod or something, I really did'nt understand it. Anyways he put 4:56 gears in it because he was planning on making a drag strip car. So I have two questions:
1- Would it be cheaper to buy a used T5, or just rebuild the one currently in the car.
2- I've been given several different ideas as to what gears I should run. My plan is to replace the 302 currently in it with a built up 351W. No drag racing, just a nice weekend toy. He has a set of gears that he's giving me for free. I believe they were the stock gears to begin with.

I would hang on to the one you have and probably just find another JMO But i guess you could have it checked out just to see the cost, And i would go with something like a 3:42 or 3:73 gear if it was me. Depending on what tire size you are going to be running also.JMO

Transmission

That's actually what I was thinking. I order this rebuild video from Hanlon Motorsports, and I was going to attempt a rebuild. That's the only way to learn. Myabe I can find one that needs rebulding for a reasonable price and buy a rebuild kit and go from there. Thanks for the response.
