tach issue

Hello everyone 1st post. am running a 1964GTO with a 455. I hooked up a sunpro retro tach sst802r. the coil is a mallory promaster 29440 and pointless distributor . All installation is correct however the tach is reading 6,000 rpm's at idle and is erratic after that.

Also make sure the green wire to the coil is on the (-) distributor side of the coil and not the (+) side.

tach issue

Yes to both replies. I actually took the tach apart and made sure the switch was on 8 cyls. Would a higher voltage output from regulator effect the readings??

Are you talking voltage regulator for the alternator? That should have no effect on the tach. A high voltage coil won't make a difference on reading either.

Could be a defective tach. Take it back and exchange it, then see if the same problem occurs with the new one.
