tach quits

i bought a equus 8000 series tach. i have a distributor with a tach plug and a super coil from accel ( red and yellow ). the tach works shortly then quits. am i missing something from the distributor or is the super coil not compatible with a tach. i tried a inductive plug connector on number 1 wire and the same problem happened. this is the second tach ive boughten with the same problem so im wondering if its possible to get two bad tachs or if im missing something important. tach was set to v8. its for a chevy 350 with distributor
