talked to jim at fat man's today

this is regarding my needing to replace a rack and pinion I replaced 2 years ago ,but only 2000 miles or so ago. It is working but leaking bad from the bellows, they were full.

I asked about too much pressure he said maybe? Maybe a bad remanufactured rack? He said I could take the nut off of the back of my pump,and there is a spring inside the supply port that if I cut the spring into a 1/3 that it would reduce the pressure output of my gm pump.

Has anybody else heard or tried this, I did take it apart and i see the spring he is talking about, before i cut it I thought I would check with you marvels here. I have my new rack 74-78 mustang ,my cross member requires me to use this one because i have the 2 holes that go all the way thru using an 8"bolt to mount it .My sales guy at Vic Hubbard speed shop said that the pumps pressure wouldn't have caused the seals to go out,because the seals where it is leaking are under no pressure only returning back to resovoir, I don't know . I will definetly keep my receipt this time they said there is a one year`warrranty on the rack. Anyway wanted to see what you guys thought thanks so much for the input. You guys are the greatest. I have the same type of set up in the 36. I did not cut the spring and have not had a single leak in the three years since I put the power steering in the car. When it was re manufactured they may not have put new seals in the rack. They do that with a lot of re manufactured parts including engines. good luck.

If you're running a GM pump, which I suspect you are, they put out way more pressure than the Mustang rack was designed to take. The effects are very touchy steering on the highway and the possibility of blowing out seals in the Mustang rack.

The correct solution is NOT to cut the spring. There are adjustable valves available from Hiedts and others (for about $70) to do the job but the best way is to use a shim kit. I believe Borgensen makes a shim kit that runs about $25 that will correctly lower the pressure output of the GM pump so it won't overpower the Mustang rack. They don't list it in their on line catalog so you'll need to call them to get one.
