TBI engine swap, 305 to a 454????

My cuzn has a 1987 chevorlet pickup, lowered 3in in the front and 4in in the back, it has a tbi 305 under the hood, he installed headers on it leaveing the O2 sensors out, ok now he is wanting more horse power and tq, we wonder how hard it would be to drop a 454 under the hood, but stay with tbi, what all do we have to do to make the engine swap no sweat???

With the O2 sensor left out, the TBI runs in open loop mode all the time. Why would you want to do that, since it hurts both power and mileage?

The TBI setup for the 454 is basically the same. You'll need the larger 454 throttle body and injectors, the correct PROM, and if you're using the ESC knock sensor you'll need the sensor and ESC module for a 454. That's about it.

You need to go here! www.fullsizechevy.com You do need the o2 set up. YOur going to find that a chip tune is all you need not the 454 deal the wiring is completely different your better of doing a 383 or a vortec swap for power.

The cost depends on what you want done so 100-250 bucks. Go to the web and check out the performance section and depending on where you live you can get a chip tuned.

need to use TB injectors that are 50% bigger than the 305 injectors.

or you could double the fuel pressure.

or a combo of both (bigger injectors and more fuel pressure).

Running without the O2 sensors keeps the computer thinking the engine isn't warmed up and it throws a rich cold start mixture at the engine. This will actually increase power output as you're operating in the mixture range at max rich torque on the power curve. It will cost some gas mileage and increase unburnt HC and CO emissions if that's important to you. It's also hard on a CAT converter if your'e running one as it makes them hotter which shortens their life span. The constant rich mixture can be hard on upper the cylinder wall, piston and ring life because the extra fuel that doesn't burn will wash the upper cylinder lube away. But if you let the engine run up to normal temps say 180-200 degrees that isn't as much of a problem than if the engine never warms up at all.

If the truck has a stick tranny it will probably be OK with a 454, if it's a 700R4 automatic, it won't be long before it protests that much torque going thru it.

the truck has the 700r4, but the 454 we are looking at it is actuatly in a 3/4 ton 95' truck that is also 5-speed, so we can get the computer, radiater, and tranny if my buddy wants stick???
