I have heard this can be done but thought I would ask.. I can't stand the TBI distributor and thought the old school one would work better./. Worth a shot

THe Distributor in the TBI engines is a HEI, it`s just made smaller for more clearence. The computer controlled unit works nicely on mine. the computer wouldn`t work very well without the timing control, since it`s related to the fuel management.

The early TBI's and TPI's used a standard size body HEI. I have an '85 TPI unit with the large body HEI. It should be pretty easy to find the correct distributor, much less hassle than trying to convert one.

If you're referring to the first style of HEI's, used from the mid 70's to the early 80's (all with vacuum advance), probably not real easy to integrate...unless you're able to do some real eprom massaging and intergarte a tach signal to the ECM.

The HEI's frm 82 or so on up, didn't have the vacuum advance, and timing advance was controlled in the EPROM.
