The blazer has 77000 miles on it. And we are the third owners. We've had it since 1999 (its a 1996). The tranny fluid was a little dark and did have a slight burned smell to it the first time I took it down a couple of months ago. When we got back into it again last week. The fluid was good with only a hint of burned smell (replaced 6 quarts of fluid with the service the first time). The blazer is driven usually less than 10 miles per day, and used rarely as a tow vehicle. And when towing, its a light load, less than 2000 pounds. The code came up after the radiator went out on us on a ~350 mile trip towing a light trailer (~1200-1500 pounds) in march.

I'm not sure what else to add. I guess the next step is to find a good tranny shop. Any suggestions? AAMCO or MR Transmission any good, or do I need to find a private shop?

Hi, I was the guy that did the work on Pilothawks transmission. I have done the sonnax repair at work without fail.
On Ph's trans it solved the problem until it reached TC lock up speeds in the 70 MPH range and then it set the hard code again. I installed the sonnax tcc reg valve kit ( the bore was worn) and the transgo kit for the other 4l60e issues. The only thing that I didn't do on his trans is replace the VB spacer plate (which was worn and I attempted to repair) my thinking is that it is possible that the TC check bal is not seating in the plate well at all and is quite possibly letting a leakage occur and allowing a slip. while it may be possible that a seal has gone south, there wasnt any serious particle accumilation in the trans pan that would suggest a seal or friction plate failure.

Replacing the VB may not fix the problem either.

What is the mileage and history of this tranny?

4l60e

you need scan tool to see the data stream, tcc slip
as I stated before you can over ride tcc to see if it working no guess work involved. my advise would be small shop rather than the ones you asked about, never seen spacer plate cause this trouble plate always has one ck ball hole always wore out replace it or repair it or install large ck ball

Its fixed!

Thanks for all the help guys. It turns out that the TC was smoked! Clutch was gone in it and it got hot enough to turn the converter a nice purple color.

Here are some pics.

The shop I had the work done at only charged me 375 bucks to change the converter, the pump valve, and change the oil. I Now have a total of about $525 in the repairs that I have done/had done. Much better than the 1700 that Mr Goodwrench (Mr Crookwrench) wanted to charge me.
