Teach me about exhaust port shape...

Exhaust port shape on Chevy small block heads confuses me.
First: What ports are in om my motor, a 1992 Chevy 350 gen 1 small block w/ swirl port heads from a Roadmaster? Judging from how they look, they are either oval or square I guess?

Then: How does the the different port styles fit against different gaskets and header flanges?
Do the port shape and gasket/header flange have to have the same port shape to be optimal?. I have ordered a set of round port copper gaskets for my (probably) square or oval port heads, but I guess that won't work?

And what port shape is on Vortec heads, which probably will be the next pair of heads I'll buy. On Summit's homepage they are described as square port heads, but the Hedman Copper gasket fitted for Vortec heads are described to be of oval port style...

Just make sure that the port exit isn't larger than the primary tube. DO NOT MATCH THE PORT TO THE HEADER GASKET. You will lose power. Put a good gasket between them and retorque until the gasket stops compressing and you' be fine.

Round port, D port Square port..... it doesn't matter as long as the port isn't larger than the primary tube and doesn't have a leak.
