tear down?

Im taking my fenders off my truck to clean up the underside and the inner fenders the problem im having is taking the bolts off. I have one side held on by carriage bolts but they don't fit right in the holes and spin when you try to lossen them. I could try to cut them off or grind them off but i dont think it will be that easy. Every thing is pretty rusty and in some areas there is a build up of crude, not sure what it is, it looks like harden tar and mud and stuff like that. I chiped some off but some wont come off so i tryed a grinder and it seems to work but if i grind in the areas i need to, around the bolts, i wont be able to use a wrench and then ill have to find a way to remove the bolt. Any ideas would be great.

Welcome to the wonderful world of old cars... I use a wire wheel on a 4.5" angle grinder to clean up around bolts. A scraper works pretty good too. As for removing rusted fasteners I use an aray of tools. 3/8 drive ratchet and a breaker bar, pneumatic ratchet, impact, cut off wheel, and sometimes you just have to use the old torches.

If you need to remove a carriage bolt that spins in the hole,if it is accessible ,clean the head and weld a nut to it.I had to do this to some bolts holding the bed on on an old Ford truck. It worked great. Hope this helps. Post some pics of your project.
