Post tear down

I recently built a sb chevy 350 with a holley systemax 2 setup, thats with the aluminum heads...., well my distributor gear wasnt meshing with my cam, my fault, that i didnt check the gear mesh. so now im tearing the motor down, and checking the bearings and everything, another thing i wanted to check was the head gaskets, the motor only had about 150 miles on it, and i want to know what to look for to see if my head gaskets were leaking. i was getting moisture in my valve covers, but i have been told that new motors can do that.

There will be a witness mark left on the machined surfaces of the heads and the block where the gasket "imprinted" itself. If there are any gaps or obvious leak marks that would be a clue, sounds like your moisture problem is normal but it can't hurt to check. Coolant in the oil will be obvious.

Harder not stronger...yes. Wearing metal pairs work best if one is softer than the other, always make the easily replaceable part softer (hence the distributor gear being softer).

You could be getting water past the head bolt's/stud's on the one's that go into the water jacket in the block if you did not use a sealer.
