Tell me about spools and the GM 10 bolt.

looking to add a spool or mini spool to a GM 8.5 10 bolt. I wanted to know what y'all think should be used. Mini or a full spool? Being used for burnout contests and 1/8th mile runs some where in the upper 8's on drag radials.

racing only? kind of a pain on the street if you need to turn corners or parallel park

If you are not going to use c clip eliinators then you will have to use a mini spool. If you are going to use c clkp eliminators then a spool is best.

If this will be used on the street at all then a spool of any kind is a bad idea. They are dangerous on the street.

I understand that the are not safe for street use. There will be non
Just track use. I have read where peple have broken mini spools. Saying that they are not as strong as a full spool. I haven't used them so I was not sure.

Here's some "food for thought" on what happens to a c-clip axle when it breaks:

Ya I know the entire shaft will come out if the c clips break.

Is there a way to find out if the axles are 28, 30, 33 without pulling the diff cover and digging in. Rearend is from a 92 suburban.

The last image is of a 1-ton axle after the hub locknut has come off taking the hub and the axle shaft.

'92 will be 30 spline.

Thanks big gear, Is it just based on years. Or is there a visual difference?

Most mini spools manufactures do not recommend mini spols to be used on pavement. If you wanting a locked axle just get a spool. I think it was summit that came out with some really inexpensive spools. Ford mini spools are slightly stronger than GM units. GM mini spools are slightly better "Lincoln lockers". Just my opinion.

GM upgraded the 8.5 to 30 spline in '90, so all 8.5 rear ends from '90 and up are 30 spline.

Slammed, I'm real glad to see that you're not looking to weld the spider gears or something along those lines!

A page w/some options for what type of rearend to use can be seen here.

Good luck.

Haha funny you ask that. I also have a 85 k20 with a simi float 14 bolt. I welded the rear spiders on it. BUT... it never sees street use and is used for mud bogs. It sets on a set of 40 inch boggers.
