Question Tempest 195 HotRod?

Hey All,
I am in the gathering info stage of my first project: a 1961 Pontiac Tempest with rear trans. I hope to change to a standard 4 speed like in a GTO. The 195 ia a 389 V8 cut longways to a L4, basicly the right side of the V. My questions are this: What is the transmission that came with the Pontiac 389 and can this be used on a 195?
This is my first project, any and all replys, comments and/or criticism is helpfull.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

If you haven't already, you might try www.poci.org or www.classicalpontiac.com or search the web links on those sites for people interested in these engines. I found a web site devoted to the Pontiac OHC 6cyl engine so there could be one for the slant 4. The transaxle on those Tempests is similar to the Corvair's so a Corvair 4 speed might be a possibility. Early Tempest experts would be able to help on that. Good luck, and don't let the V8 lemmings make you switch! P.S. I REALLY like your disclaimer!!!!

My first car in 1968 was a '63 Tempest 4cyl/4bbl & powerslide! Cousin put high-comp 389 pistons & cam out of his junk motor in it & it ran real good until I sent a piston thru the hood!! Welded the hole in the block shut and drove it on 3 cylinders for another 2 months .... hehe -> saw one in a T-bucket not too long ago that looked good

THE TEMPEST 4 BANGER IS REALLY A 389 BLOCK MISSING ONE CYLINDER BANK SO EVERY THING OFF THE V-8 WILL BOLT RIGHT UP(FLYWHEEL,BELLHOUSING--THE BALL OF WAX). THE PRFORMANCE PISTONS,CAM AND THE AFTER MARKET ALUMINUM HEADS FOR THE V-8 BOLT ON.THE MOTOR IS A CROSSFLOW DESIGN AND WILL MAKE ALL KINDS OF HORSE POWER. IF I CAN FIND THEM(NO PROMISES)I WILL SCAN IN SOME PICTURES AND THE SLIPS OF ONE OF THESE IN ACTION THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!!!
