I just spray a piece of photo paper when checking color match, but really won't help much for checking how the gun is really spraying since too small an area. If a basecoat/clearcoat, your test piece must be clearcoated too before checking the match of your color. Also remember the color of your undercoat can affect the color, if you don't have actual full coverage of the base, so take that in account if the surface you are spraying over is different, but you could prime your test piece as well.

I like using a piece of scrap hood or fender..you can paint over it a number of times when testing color and if it is critical then shoot the base over some primer..that is if you need to be anal on a particular job..

Most bodyshops have a lot of wrecked parts which were replaced and most times will give you some or charge you a little to get rid of them.
Import hoods are best as they are small and light.
Really, just about ANY metal will do,old washing machines, dryers, equipment panels off A/C units.Just have to LOOK around and you'll find practice panels all over. Does not necessarly have to be automotive.

Aluminum sign blanks, you can get them in different sizes. Might check with your local highway dept to see if they're tossing any...

I have an old hood but I hate the idea of having to prep it when it is only a test panel. I've never sprayed on butcher paper. Would it show orange peel and tendency to run? I also have some 12" wide aluminum roof flashing. Do you think this would work?
Thanks for all of the replies,
Scott

Paper is ok for just simple pattern adjusting but you get no "real" application aspect. Now,You can use white poster board/ Still not quite like shooting over sanded primer but close enough.
The aluminum flashing would work but it has a slick anodized finish and would be a little too slick for a good paint pass, you could scuff it with a gray scuff pad though for a better texture.
Unfortunately, the only "real" way to do spray pass practice is over the real thing. Yeah, It's a little more work but I would MUCH rather screw up on IT than the real project.
