The swap will NOT be a simple straightforward out and in swap.
The 350 and 400 have three different tailshaft housings each, and the output shafts for each are different also.

The 350 uses a cable operated kickdown for "passing gear", and the 400 uses an electrically operated solenoid to activate the "passing gear"

Even with the same tailshaft housing length the 400 is longer.

Read more about it in the links I provided in the read me sticky post titled Transmission Information at the top of this forum.

my th400 and my th350 are exactly the same length and i asked a mechanic about that electric thing and he said it would work as long as i hook up the vacuum but i had to get another crossmember and i noticed the tailshaft is larger on the 400 so i need a new yolk

im switching to a 400 because they are better for racing and they are more heavy duty most dragsters that i know have them. i dont know really why other than that.. lol maybe i got myself into something i wish i hadnt!

Turbo 350 generally are a better choice unless you are running a big block with insane power. Thm 350 can be built to take tones of abuse and will give crisper shift have better gear spacing and most importantly waist alot less power. If you wish to have you kick down work with the 400 you will have to retro fit a solenoid under the gas petal or somewhere on the throttle linkage other wise you will not be happy with the performance most likely. It will work with out the kick down solenoid but it will shift to early under full throttle and not kick down into second for your passing gear. You are right if it is a actually 400 (not a 374) you will need a different yoke.

i'm rebuilding a vette , and i swapped out the 400 for a 350. they're quicker through the gears, and don't use as much h.p. to run.i'm only putting out maybe 350 h.p. max, but i know guys who run 500 h.p. through a 350 turbo with no problems.
