TH 350 lost 3rd gear and reverse is weak
A couple of weeks back I posted about the TH 350 in my 82 3/4 ton truck shifting HARD into 3rd gear. Well, yesterday, I lost 3rd gear altogether, and reverse is slipping bad. Parked the truck rather than do further damage. I guess the direct clutches have gone away. This is a TH 350 with the 9 inch extention housing. Will a short shaft TH 400 go in without anything other than a slip yoke change? Truck has a 2 piece driveline. I could rebuild the TH 350, but would a TH 400 really last longer? I guess I would have to get a different trans mount, and move the cross member back a few inches also, not a problem. The trans fluid looks/smells OK. Now, I already have a complete TH 350 rebuild kit, but I was planning to use that in a short shaft TH 350 I also have for another project. Engine's a stroker 305/334 and runs fine. It's just a big truck, and this is the second TH 350 to go bad in it now. Originally, the truck came with a 700R4, but it was the first year for that trans and it only lasted 16,000 miles. G.M. paid 85% to backdate it to a TH 350, as there were'nt many folks up on the 700R4 at the time. I've lost faith in these TH 350, medium duty transmissions. What would you do? Thanks.
