TH-350 stays in first gear
Today I got my Nova out to do some block sanding (its in primer) and decided to drive it up the street and back. This is the first time actually driving it this far, and when I went to shift, it just stayed in first. I am using a B&M pro stick. I even tried to start out in 2nd and 3rd to see if it made a difference and it didn't. It just stays in first. The guy I bought it from said it had a manual valve body and worked fine. Although it has been sitting for a long time, about 2 years, do you think anything could of seized up or stuck? Thanks in advance.
edit: I found out that the governor gear is NOT stripped so any suggestions on what it might be? Last edited by 70ChvyNova; 11-27-2006 at 06:20 PM.

Thm 350 stays in first gear
Just in case it does not have a manual valve body-do you have vacuum to the modulator? Does it have a modulator?
Was it sitting someplace where water could have been introduced into the trans? What does the fluid level and condition look like?

Agreed... does it free wheel when you let off the gas or does it provide braking? If it free-wheels, its not getting a vacuum signal.

To answer your questions,
-It is a manual valve body b/c there is no modulator. -There is a plug w/silicone where the modulator would be. -It has NOT been sitting anywhere were water could of got into it. -The fluid level and condition are good. -It does NOT free-wheel when I let off the gas. I still think that a valve has stuck so I might put some additive in it to see if that will work them loose.

Because of the way most manual valve bodies are made,passages cut to redirect fluid,and valves pinned in place,I'm not guessing a valve is stuck.
Check to make sure the manual valve is indexed correctly[manual linkage]. I have seen shifters not adjusted right which will in turn keep the manual valve inside trans from positioning correctly. Please post back.

My dad brought home a vacuum modulator from work where he had another th350 sitting around. We are going to put it in and see if it solves the problem. It might be a long time before we get to see b/c the weather has been pretty bad lately.

modulator is probably it, usually always is
if its not working or is d/c then it will not leave 1st gear good lcuk
