The trans guru in Orlando many moons ago told me to use the modulator w/a small gold can w/a red stripe.
It's adjustable- turning it CW (tighter) will make the shifts firmer and later, and vice versa. Use small increments as you adjust it, 1/4-1/2 turn at the most. That said, I ended up always using a B&M modulator- which BTW is the small gold w/red stripe... At least the last one I bought (still hanging on the wall) was.
