TH350 hesitates before engaging reverse

This truck has been doing this for over 10 years and really isn't any worse than it was. It has a serious leak or two now so before I have it rebuilt I would like to know what causes it to hesitate. It takes about 3 or 4 seconds before it engages reverse, forward engages immediately. Valve body?

you can have several problem areas if this trans acted the same for 10 years.

excessive pump gear clearance will reduce the pump volume and cause a delay since more clutch packs apply in reverse than forward first gear.

The hard seal problem could be there now , but for 10 years , makes me wonder about that.

During the rebuild process I would suggest a good check of all clearances

It behaves the same hot or cold. I was expecting it to go completely out when I firts got it but it hasn't changed much in 10 years.
