TH350 output shaft

I have a TH350 with a 3 in. output shaft. From what Ive read, I now know this means that it's from a truck that was originally equipped with a transfer case. Is there any way (asides from swapping the output shaft for the correct one) to run a 6 (or 9) in. shaft with extension housing. If there isn't, how much would a transmission shop charge to do that, and would it be more cost effective to buy a used transmission from the junkyard with the correct output shaft

the out put shaft must be swapped for the correct length shaft

And it would be expensive to change it. Everything has to come out of the trans to change it.

That explains the short shaft. I asked a trans guy here that exact question about 5 years ago, and he quoted me $75 for a "gut-swap". I'd figure more like $100 these days.
