Most likely scenario-
You didn't get the little S-link from the rooster comb/shift lever inside the trans case connected to the manual valve in the valve body correctly when the valvebody/shift kit was installed(most likely not connected at all).
Pull the pan, drop valve body and connect the link as you re-install the valvebody. You have to connect the link at the same time you are installing the valve body, you can't connect the link with the valvebody bolted down.
