TH350 Seal

I have my engine & TH350 trans removed from the car. I want to get a idea of how difficult is it to replace the front & rear shaft seals for the trans and do the work my self. Does this take special tools? Can I get the replacement seals at auto parts stores? I have not worked on a trans before so can you recommend any internet sites where I can get directions or photos?

Seals are relatively easy to replace, just pop them out and drive the new ones in. The front pump/converter neck seal is a bit tougher because you have a long shaft and a half moon of bellhousing limiting your access but it is nothing terribly difficult.

Most auto parts stores will have or can order both seals.

ericnova72, I noticed you are in SW Michigan. I used to live in St. Joseph, Michigan. What town are you in?

If you don't already have it, consider getting a copy of Ron Session's book on the TH350. JMO.

I levered the front seal out with a large screwdriver - careful not to nick the input shaft with the screwdriver so be firm but precise. I used a block of wood and a little Permatex on the outer surface of the seal ring to install the new seal - just go slow if it is your first one.

The rear shaft seal on the tailhousing is just as easy. Remove the tailhousing from the trans. I have seen these tailhousings cracked by those that use too much force to remove the old seal. Once the old seal is out, use a seal driver or a press to install the new one, again using a thin smear of Permatex or other such for a sealer.

I'm about 15 miles south of Battle Creek, outside a little town called Union City.
