TH400 shifter problem

I just put my tranny back in my 70 Monte. I got a new reproduction shifter cable because I broke the old one. My problem is that the gates on the floor shifter are not lining up where they are supposed to be. I can shift the tranny by pulling or pushing the cable when it is disconnected from the shifter, but when I connect it it doesn't get into gear. Could it be a faulty cable? Any help is greatly appreciated.

shift cable

this sound like that you haven't fastened the outer cable so that it doesn't move. both ends of the outer cable have to be secured and only the inner cable moves. if the outer cable moves everything moves and nothing happens.. good luck

The outer cable is already secured at both ends. But the cable did have to make a tough s-turn to get fastened in place. Maybe this could be the problem? Does anyone know how long the cable is supposed to be?

shift cable

this is the only thing i can tell you about the cable. you might try a visit to the dealer parts department , sometimes the parts book will tell the length. you might add some lube to the inside of the cable. maybe some ATF oil , it is thin but is still a good lube. that is all i can think of as of now. i hope the people you purchased the cable from sent the correct one . you might recheck the part numbers with them.
