TH700 output shaft

Hi guys, I just took my th700(from a 1989 GMC Safari)apart which I am going to rebuilt with a kit I just adquired, then I want to put it behind my 1984, Chevy pickup with a 305 v-8, which went through a frame off restoration. The problem I have is that this transmission has an electronic speed sensor and the gear to work with this sensor on the shaft is not like the gear I need for my cable speedometer. My question is if an output shaft from an earlier transmission will work in this 1989 transmission?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.
Luis

Pull the metal reluctor ring ( electronic speed-O) part off the shaft you have in 1989 unit.. should be 2 holes there. Install plastic gear with proper clip

use the front hole for a non corvette tail housing application

hi there

you wouldnt be able to swap the shafts anyways without totally and completely gutting both trannies

because the output shaft is the very first thing that goes into the case when assembling it

so.

you shoiuld be able to swap the speedo parts and tail housing though like already posted

if not then you can find the right parts, many of us have 700r4 trannies just laying around for parts etc

good luck

fast68.. you are confused again.

The 700r4 type of trans does not need to come completely apart for an output shaft to be changed. it is not the first item into the trans case.

The output shaft on a 700r4 - 4L60 trans slips in from the back end of the case.

As stated earlier, MOST shafts having reluctors on them ALSO have speedo clip holes in the shaft. Remove the reluctor and if the holes are there, just do as Crosley suggested, that is to install your old speedo gear and tail housing.

If the holes are not there, you will need to dismantle the transmission ONLY FAR ENOUGH TO REMOVE THE SNAP RING HOLDING THE FRONT PLANET ON. Once that snap ring is off, remove old shaft, insert new shaft, put snap ring on, then reinstall the parts you removed to get to the snap ring.

Thank you for your advise, mmerllinn I already had my transmission already apart and I did what Crosley said, I used my press and took every thing off the shaft. I now have to take the other transmission off my truck but I have to wait, is raining here in Miami and have to wait for a dry day. Thank you guys.
