Taking a page from Amazon's customer reviews, what if the "Thanks" button was to be replaced with two buttons: "Helpful" and "Not Helpful". This would be most suitable for technical forums, and no "Helpful" numbers will show up for any users.

Don't take it personally Poncho. Your idea is a good one. Its just that some people would rather say "thank you" rather than to click it. I can see the benefit of both. if someone is helping me, I don't mind saying thank you in my response. If it happens to be a rather old thread, I would much rather click "Thank you" than to revive the thread.

Thanks for thinking of it.. I just feel it's not the way for people to find who really knows what they are talking about..

We have MANY great people that know first hand what's right and what's wrong here... And some don't even have thank you's... So now what do you do.. It's like the WIKI... the guy's that post and some Dumb *** COME'S ALONG AND CHANGES IT.. Why take the time... I know for me.. I tryed to help many here and some ****** comes along and say's YOU CAN'T DO THAT !!!! yeah !! Ok... So now I won't even try to help.. Just post my pictures of WHAT YOU CAN DO !!!!! And I even get told something for that... How's that saying go...

''the proof is in the pudding''

A better thread title would have been "Keep count of thanks, or not".

Saying thanks is not the issue here. I wanted to know if original idea of the thanks button deal was to distinguish "good" posters from the "other" posters when a new person came here looking for technical info- in which case there shouldn't be off topic/Lounge posts counted, or if it was for anything under the sun.

Thanks should be counted and displayed ONLY if there is supposed to be a tie-in between the number of thanks and competency, IMO. Otherwise the count isn't needed except to say "I gots more than you gots!"

But the idea that it was somehow wrong to say thank you never entered my mind. And I did not get that impression from anyone who has posted on this thread, either.

When it was brought up, it was just a simple idea that members could show appreciation to one another....that was all

Somehow, that seems to have gotten over analyzed and blown out of proportion......just like a lot of other threads around here.

Do you guys really think anyone pays any attention at all to how many times someone has been thanked? I don't and find it hard to believe anyone else really does either. Maybe I am wrong.....

Another way to look at it would be to throw it out for discussing BEFORE doing something. But like I said earlier- this is not a democracy so to have done that would be out of the ordinary.

Big deal? No, not at all. Just an off topic discussion.

If I'm the one.. I gave my thoughts of it like everyone else..I think the idea is a good one but is being used by some a different way... Kind of like the laws they past.. Start's out good then it's pushed in the wrong way.. Sorry if you didn't like my respond.. (If it's me)

The original question was whether the thanks was supposed to help a newcomer find "reliable" info or not. The membership at large- meaning the regulars- prolly could care less one way or the other.

If you look at the poll results, more like it totally or in part than don't, so I don't know why you're confused.

Good point and of course the regulars are the ones jumping in here. My personal opinion would be the newbies are going to read what interests them, take the advice that sounds correct to them and never think twice about whether the person that is giving the advice has ever been thanked.

I for one like the forum and have no desire to criticize it or the moderators. You really can not make everyone happy but by and large I think the vast majority of us are. That is a pretty good track record.

I would like to apologize. I got carried away when typing and started suggesting alternatives, clearly going way off topic.
