I'm looking at thin head gaskets in the ~.028 range and I found a few, GM makes one (10105117), mr gasket has one (ultraseal 1134), and victor reinz 5476.

These 3 all seem to be a bit fancier than a plain shim gasket, but how flat do the mating surfaces need to be? I have a 1977 350 block thats never been decked and a set of vortec heads, I'm not sure how flat they really are yet. Anyone have experiences with these?

Anytime you use a thin head gasket, always have the block and heads decked to assure flatness, otherwise your asking for issues. The stock replacement gaskets are often .041 thick so they can compensate for low spots on the decks. I use and perfer the GM gaskets, however, Victor makes a good gasket also.
