Thinking of going 3:73
I have an 85 chevy truck with A 305 and a 700r4 tranny. Got 342 gears now. Will going to 373 be worse, good ,no change. Looking for more seat of the pants power at take off

You will definitely see some improvement. I don't think you will set low ET at Pomona, but it will be noticeable.

A 305 in a truck needs 4.10`s, if you want some "seat of the pants".
The OD gear tames a higher (4.10) gear ratio much more than a low. A small motor needs gears to get a heavy vehicle going. If you have tall tires you may need even more gear.
