Thread Tension ?

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm starting to get back in action with my Consew 225. Last night I was practicing some straight stitching with 207 and experienced some fraying problems above the needle. The machine continued to sew and the thread - or maybe "rope" in this case, LOL! - never broke. First thing I suspected was a tension problem. But instead of adjusting the knob, I rethreaded the machine eliminating one of the loops in the 3 hole thread guide. After this, the problem was solved. My question is this : is it really necessary to use all three holes with any thread that I use ? Cant I just use 2 or possibly one ?

That is what is recommended for heavier thread, less back and forth in the thread guides. You can just run it straight through the thread guide on the top of the machine, that will normally do it. I hope you're using at least a size 23 needle for that size thread. That will also help.
