throttle cable

In looking at a new throttle cable on ebay and in catalogs; I have noticed that mine is missing the plastic sleeving on the outside. This is where the cable attaches to the linkage. I know it makes the cable stiffer and prevents kinking, but how important is it? Its been that way for quite a while. Thanks. 71 el camino, 86 350, 600 holley

I always thought it was a dust-repelling device, but I've been wrong before.
