tilt column shift indicator

I just installed a tilt steering column from a 1993 Astro in my 49 Chevy pickup. It worked out very well. Also found a nice shift indicator & pointer for a 3 speed 700r4 from an old 80's van from a junkyard. The indicator mounts ok on the upper part of the column, under the steering wheel, which always remains stable. My problem is when the wheel is tilted up or down the pointer is moved away or closer from the indicator letters, depending on the tilt position its never in the right spot? Is there anybody that has solved this problem? Any advise on how to approach this??
