timeing

what is the best way to adjust the timeing and carb? dist is stock with new cap and rotor. cam is crane 274. it feels slugish and if i hit the gas it want to die. i need help to get the most power out of this engine i have a vac gage if that helps. it also wants to die when i put it into drive. one more thing when i give it gas it takes like 3 sec for it to come back down to idle thanks for your help carb is a 750 vac

Do you have a vacuum leak? How are you setting your timing? Is the distributor a tooth off? What kind of carb.? I know there's so much more, but i don't care to think of right now.

i set it at 10 base then i hoked the vacume advance up and the idle whent up si i droped the idle and thats all i did the vacume line is hooked to the port on the fron tof the carb if that helps.

what carb do u have? if its an edlebrock it might be a tiemd vacuum port. use a maifold source. try driving it with yer vacuum advance disabled. be sure and plug it. u may have a blown diaphram in yer stock (and old im assuming) V.A. 10 initial is a good starting point. yer total should be 34+ degrees
